“Why Are Gasoline Prices So High?”

Michael Giberson

The title question, “Why are gasoline prices so high?”, or some variant has been the primary driver of new viewers from search engines to Knowledge Problem over the past three or four weeks.

It is a topic we have done before (and before that, and before that, etc., etc.), but of course those searchers want to know, “why are gasoline prices so high now?”

Crude oil prices are higher than last Spring, but no recent hurricane damage to oil production areas, unlike Fall of 2005. Otherwise those posts cover the basic points.

One thing that is not driving up the price of gasoline, except maybe by a fraction of a hairsbreadth, is the purchase of crude oil for injection into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as John Whitehead demonstrates at Environmental Economics. i am in the 9th grade and i am doing a paper of why the gas is so high and i am aginst it i need a little bit more infomation because all the sites i have looked at is suporting the price if you could get me some web sites that would be great thank you very much have a good day

  2. you are dumb and gas prices shall come down when i am president of the U.S.A in 2012 ! mwahahahaha and i know that government officals can so something of this matter so you shoudl consider who you are also going to vote for in the 2008 election

  3. Gas prices are high because one, we’re in Iraq which is increasing oil prices, federal and state gas taxes are to high, and Bush isn’t doing anything about the big oil companies and their crazy price increases.

  4. I think it’s cause we’re blowing up so much money a day in Iraq. We need better leadership.

  5. i think these gas prices are ridiculous i mean how is the government not running dry on money as well i know they need gas to and if they have to pay for gas they should understand our problem but they do not wish those ass holes would lower the price.!!! also think of the future if we are having a hard time then think of our children they will have to all become doctors and work two shifts just to afford a car and then have to have another job on the side to afford gas and the essentials just to live

pretty soon they are going to run us into the ground more then they already have and when the flying cars do finally come out then the world will have hit new revolution and a new stand on the world! also dud hope you become president lol

  6. Studies show that while gas prices are on the rise US consumers have done little to nothing to curb their consumption. Supply and demand, people. As long as we are willing to pay the price without reducing the quantity we use gas prices will continue to rise. I truly believe that is up to the consumers to set the market rate.

If you were to travel 200 miles per week when gas was $2 per gallon, and when gas went to $3 per gal you still traveled 200 miles per week then they are going to push it and see if you will travel those 200 miles at $4 per gal. If you are, well they’ll push it some more. If you aren’t though, they are going to lower their prices.

And like all of the rest of you, I’ve written my congressman and asked him when the he** the government is going to step in and put a cap on this. No one needs to a net profit of BILLIONS per quarter. That is just ridiculous and makes me sick. –and no, my congressmen has not yet replied with an answer, either.

  8. The majority of our oil comes from Canada so why would you say that our troops in Iraq has ANYTHING to do with the prices? That is just ill education kicking in! Support our Troops and Support our Leaders… if you don’t like who is in power, then be the power and vote!

  9. well to reply to the person abov i say that it has a lot to do with the troops being in iraq i mean yes i support the troops but i dont support the person that put them there. we spending so much money on the war we could be spendn it on better things instead of weapons to kill people just cuz

  10. i personally think that gas prices are outragious… soon to be 4 dollars a gallon and i cant afford it at all… im a senior and only work part time at a day care that doesnt pay shit, and when i have to drive 30 minutes to get to school everyday i spend about a 100 dollars a week and cant pay for any thing else … they need to lower the damn prices becuase its starting to piss me off.. or at least raise the minimum wage to all the part time workers who are still in school.. soon ill be walking everywhere or riding my bike becasue i wont be able to drive my cool ass car hahah

  11. they’re going to keep going up.

    worldwide demand increasing.
    +
    worldwide supply decreasing.

there’s 40 years of oil left and 0 years of cheap oil left.

luckily, I drive a 100mpg moped, so if gas costs $15/gallon, well it’s the same as about $3/gallon in a 20mpg car.

    🙂

  13. I believe that, it all start from the white house. If we have a President that is not willing to let farners call the shot, and stand up to them, we would be find. But when you have a President that can care less about the American people and all he can thing about, is how much money he can get, AND WHAT WILL PROFIT HIM, the end become where we are known. We must make a differents in this election, or exepect the worse to happen. And by the way, the American people, still don’t know what happen on September 11. So do you really think that having someone like Bush in office would really benifit the US. I was always told that, a President to a country, is like a husband to a wife relationship. Secrets is what breaks us up. United we stand, divided we fall! So to answer the question about gas going up is. I think that the question becomes? Can we trust our President?

  15. The “greenie weenies” in this country are at fault. They would not let the U.S. drill for our own oil in Alaska, gulf of Mexico, coast of California & the Carolinas. That’s why our prices are so high, because we have to buy it from everyone else. The environmentalists should not be controlling our country.

  16. the person above me sounds ridiculous. sure, drill in alaska, and spoil the last of something pure worth conserving that we’ve got. it’s greed and ignorance in people like you that has gotten us where we are. there is much more to worry about than price when it comes to the energy problem, and drilling in alaska would not have been the solution. it doesn’t matter where you get it from, it’s still going to run out, and it’s still going to get fought over, which is why people have to learn to either a) conserve it by driving low gas-consumption cars or b) push for the so called “free” market for cars to start releasing different, more energy efficient cars. we’re not going to get anywhere blaming the environmentalists for not letting off on the oil companies.

  18. To Claire: You are a buffoon

Stop hugging trees and get your @$$ to work. There is enough oil in this country to fuel our cars for 500 years. Please take your head out of the liberal sand and start reading some fiscal reports.

This “green” crap is going to break middle America for sure. When you are begging your neighbor for an extra potatoe 10 yrs from now please don’t come and post here.

  20. John… I think that you are a buffoon.
Even if the fuel can be used for 500 years, what happens after that? Are you so selfish that you don’t even care about the future generations that you are fucking everything up for?

  21. The government does not care about the gas prices because they really do not have to pay for the gas we end up paying for there gas for them.
    How is that?
Well all of the adults who work of some sort pay taxes and they do not use money the money numbers are so high in computers not dollar bills or anything.
These guys are anoying, rude, cruel, and everything above they do not care.
The gas price is up so they can provide war material to Iraq which is stupid.
They are also hurting themeselves while they are at it.
Gas is unbeliable right know anyway.

  23. Gas prices are so high because Bush and Cheney are in the oil business and they are tryin to make as much money as they can before they get out of office and they will continue to make money until someone of high leadership does something about it.

  26. When is the last time a refinery was built? Why doesn’t the government do something? Because we elect the people in office and we have Republican Pres and Dem House and Sen, and when we have a Dem Pres then we have Rep Hous and Sen. We have a play room for wealthy men and woman to get their special interests taken care of. We live in a country where it takes 300 pages of crap to change a light bulb in the Senator’s bathroom, because they are to lazy to do it themselves.
I watched 1 hour of legistlation in the state that I am from where they tried to attach a campaign funding bill to a VA bill. Yes they wanted to pass a law saying that part of the tax dollars from the state would go to pay for thier campaigns.

Gas prices are high because we don’t rely on our own resources. Greenies as I have heard them called are responsible. But so is our government that has limited Car companies on coming to market with alternative cars. It is not Governments responsibility to supply funding to the major car manufacturers to research more cost efficient vehicles. They should be doing that on their own. But they chose not to because the price of gas in the US was not that high. When the refineries were hit, they should have been rebuilt by the big Gas companies to meet the new requirements. Those huge profits should be reinvested into better and more refineries. Why should the government pay for their refineries? We want better polution control and the companies want the government to pay for the changes. Sure…pay for them initially, give the companies 2 years to comply and then let them pay for it themselves.

The biggest problem is our politicians and the special interest items they try to tack onto everything that would be good for the country. Republicans are no better than Democrats, Democrats are no better than Republicans. They are all there for themselves not for us. The money spent to campaign in this country is outragious. Put some of that money toward helping stimulate the economy instead of spending it. The top three candidates from each party will be allowed the 30 minutes a week on tv for 6 months. With debates every 4th week. And we all decide who wins. Candidates are in office based on the level of votes, not by party. The same for senators, and representatives.

  28. At the root of the stunning rise in the price of oil, up 56 percent this year and 365 percent in a decade, is a positive development: an unprecedented boom in the world economy.

Demand from China and India alone is expected to double in the next two decades as their economies continue to expand, with people there buying more cars and moving to cities to seek a way of life long taken for granted in the West.

India and China are home to about a third of humanity. People there are demanding access to electricity, cars, and consumer goods and can increasingly afford to compete with the West for access to resources. In doing so, the two Asian giants are profoundly transforming the world’s energy balance.

Today, China consumes only a third as much oil as the United States, which burns a quarter of the world’s oil each day. By 2030, India and China together will import as much oil as the United States and Japan do today.

If the Chinese and Indians consumed as much oil for each person as Americans do, the world’s oil consumption would be more than 200 million barrels a day, instead of the 85 million barrels it is today. No expert regards that level of production as conceivable.

  31. Visit my blog http://votetoregulategasprices.blogspot.com/ then read my post on Saturday, April 19, 2008

I was searching the net I came across the testimony of Timothy A Hamilton, before the Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington, DC on February 1, 2006 His remarks point out the ability of the major oil companies to control the availability and price we pay at the pump.

Perhaps you too will join in my effort to Vote To Regulate Gas Prices this November.

  32. Ben Double Crossed

Gas Prices are High Because of Foreign Tax Credits and the Algiers Declaration of 1975
    FOREIGN TAX CREDITS
In 1977 Representative Benjamin Rosenthal of New York produced secret Internal Revenue Service documents going back to 1950. They showed that the tax laws of Saudi Arabia were drafted with the help of Aramco to call the added price of oil not a “royalty” or “cost of doing business,” as was proper, but an income tax.” The Saudis did this knowing that income tax paid to a foreign country is deductible from the income taxes an oil company pays the United States on all income received in the United States by the parent firm. From Pgs. 61-64 The Media Monopoly by Ben H. Bagdikian 5th edition paperback color emphasis added

“This plan was approved in secret session of the National Security Council and carried out without any request for authorization by Congress. A quarter of a century later, when members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee un-earthed details, the source of the king’s added income had become too self-evident for comment.” From pgs. 193-196 Oil Power The Rise and Fall of An American Empire by Carl Solberg 1976 paperback

“This practice, perfected in Saudi Arabia, was quickly adopted elsewhere. Eventually, every oil-producing nation where American companies had a concession enacted an income tax law to increase its oil revenue by tapping the foreign tax credit provision of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.” From pgs. 183-190 America: Who Really Pays The Taxes by Donald L.Barlett & James B. Steele paperback

“Since that time the major multinational U.S. oil companies have paid hardly a penny of U.S. income tax on their foreign income.” page130 BANKS. BORROWERS, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT

    INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT
    Algiers Declaration March 1975

“With regard to the depletable natural resources, as OPEC’s petroleum resources are, it is essential that the transfer of technology must be commensurate in speed and volume with the rate of their depletion, which is being accelerated for the benefit and growth of the economies of the developed countries”

A major portion of the planned or new petrochemical complexes, oil refineries and fertilizer plants be built in the territories of OPEC Member Countries with the co-operation of industrialized nations for export purposes to the developed countries with guaranteed access for such products to the markets of these countries. [Read sections 10 and 11]

  33. The three most significant reasons for the spike in oil prices are relatively simple.

    1. Supply and Demand
    2. Government Intervention in the Oil Industry
    3. The weakening of the dollar

The price of gasoline at the pump is directly related to the world crude oil prices. Oil and gas futures are bought and sold much like stocks and bonds are, thus their price can be volatile. Also, as in all market economies, the very basis for determining a price are where the demand and supply curves intersect one another. Also, these curves also show how much a federal or state tax is paid by the producers and consumers of a specific good or service. Demand worldwide is growing exponentially, and supply is relatively limited. Thus the allocation of the scarce resource remains to be determined by who will value and thereby pay the most for it, hence increased prices.

The government is heavily involved in the oil industry. Keep in mind, your big U.S. companies do some drilling, they are mainly responsible for purchasing crude oil at the market price, shipping it to refineries and refining it, then shipping the final product to gas stations and selling it. Over the past 30 years oil companies have had one of the worst profit margins in the U.S. Remember, profit margin is really the true metric measure of a company’s performance. The reason for this is because of the high taxes they have had to pay and the amount of research and development they incur. Back to refining. Refining costs have gone up, and laws preventing refining in the U.S. have increased as well. Also, we have many places to drill for oil, but the government prevents oil companies from drilling there. State and federal taxes that consumers pay at the pump contribute quite a bit. It is tough to say if the federal gas tax is paid primarily by consumers or producers; however, the state taxes are primarily paid by consumers. These taxes contribute to the price of gasoline at the pump. Also taxes on the oil companies contribute to the price of gasoline. The U.S. has also increased its purchase of oil for the strategic petroleum reserve. This has also increased the price in gasoline. All in all, you have your federal and state governments to thank for the increase in price.

As you all may know, the U.S> dollar has been in decline for quite some time now, and while the dollar began to decline before the price of gasoline rose, these two entities are related. The idea is our exchange rate. The price per barrel of crude oil in Euros is in the mid to upper 60’s, while the price in U.S. dollars is now above $130. The exchange rate of 1 U.S. dollar to 1 Euro is 1 to 2. In other words, it takes 2 dollars to buy one Euro. Blame the federal reserve for this fiasco. They mismanaged our currency and interest rates severely, and thus we pay for it now.

For those of you thinking a profit windfall tax would help, you are sorely mistaken. If you think price controls will work, you are also sorely mistaken. We had each of these in the 1970’s and 1980’s and well…they don’t work. In fact they are counter productive. The solution? Use less gasoline. Get the government out of the oil industry and allow them to drill and refine in the U.S. Cut taxes. Strengthen our dollar.

One quick note on taxes. If you ever study environmental economics…you find that externalities exist. The usage of gasoline has costs that the average consumer does not see. For instance environmental and social costs (i.e. carbon emissions and traffic jams). The taxes on gasoline and tolls are supposed to pass along those environmental and social costs to the actual consumers.

To conclude, are the oil companies to blame? Hell no. Your government is. Not Bush, not Cheney…the entire government. Believe what you want, but a simple economic analysis provides the answers. You may not like them, but they are the truth. Economics rules. It ought to be a required class in High School. The media sits there and spits out “Record Profits!” They fail to give you the real information, the necessary information. Then you have conspiracy theorists who are absolutely insane. In any case, this was a quick, crash course in modern economics. If you want more clarity…ask and I’ll go deeper.

  35. OPEC is retarded, Bush hasn’t done his best (Thanks to the prior president) . I only go to gas stations to buy food. I laugh at everyone else who are a major Slave to the Grind. Heres the thing: Ride a Fuckin bike to work, or Sell you car an buy a hyrbid. I ride my bike because it is close to where I work, plus I get excercise out of it, and I am actually a lot more in shape than I have ever been. And all my health problems are gone. Obesity has become a monumental problem among most americans. Mcdonalds is a huge downfall to our society. If people would ride bikes everywhere and have hrbrids, the world would be a better place. Its either that or bring back the chariot.

It is now time to make certain that everyone understands the truth, solutions, and what will happen if we fail to act now.

Gas prices are high because the dollar ain’t worth crap. Secondly, supply is low and demand is high. The title of this page says a lot most Americas do have a knowledge problem, they don’t understand basic economics. We NEED to drill in anwar and off our coasts where we know there is oiland we NEED to build refineries to boost supply without begging opec which is just a bunch of islamo-fascists that hate us to do anything. The gas prices arent high because oil companies are sticking it to us,but the tree-hugging nutjobs are sticking it to us! Oil companies make 8-10 cent agallon while the fed gov makes 18+ cent, some state govs as high as 40 cent a gallon. If you find a high price it’s not caused by capitalism but by liberals and big government. Don’t have a knee jerk reaction because the liberal media says something instead actually get educated

Well, I for one disagree with how the gas prices are increasing briskly. I remember when I was younger and my granparents would tell me stories about how inexpensive gas prices use to be. I wish that I wouldnt have slumbered wishing they would shut up(inside joke dont take it personal old people.)while they were telling me then I would have appreciated it. Back in the day was the good-ol-days. I hope you enjoyed my little story thankyou, and goodbye.

Who is voting for McCain? People that dont mind a couple more years of war? People that dont mind high gas prices( that come with a couple more years with war)? With higher gas prices, the price of transporting goods goes up. The more it costs to transport goods, then the price of everything.. EVERYTHING goes up.

Our pay is not going up but the price of every single thing in sight at the grocery store and just about any store is going up. This is a bad thing. How do we save ourselves? By ending war. We are diverting millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel to Iraq and Afganistan to fight. Thus, causing the demand to go up. Higher demand causes higher prices.

    No war.. please…

  45. My nearest gas station was $4.17 a gallon in Monday. Yesterday, Wednesday, the gas stood at $4.45 a gallon. Now, I was observing the price of gas had gone down from $129 a barrel to $117 a barrel during that time. So, it doesn’t appear the Arabs are a part of the increase in gas costs. In fact judging by station prices about 100 miles away, and nearer the pipe depots, not even the refiners and distributors seem likely to be causing this recent spilke. The increase must me caused by the expense in trucking in the fuel and the stations themselves.

Things will undoubtedly get worse. I have read $5+ a gallon by July 4th. $6+ a gallon by Labor Day. And according to some experts we can expect gas in the $12 to $15 a gallon range within 2 years. Now if a person lives in a major city and can walk, bike or take public transit, they might want to get started. Unfortunately I live about 30 miles from work, and that would be any employment, so chinging jobs is not an option. Also walking or bikin not options as I would be competing wit freeway traffic which averages 78 MPH. Additionally, there is no room at the side of the road at bridges. And two substantial mountain passes. And no public transit as that employment area 30 miles away is a town of only 20,000 and the largest town within 100 miles.
The high cost of gas is bound to make unemployment increase, increase the costs of transportation to all commodities, especially food. Expect gas thefts to rise with resultant damage to vehicles being much more than loss of fuel.

  49. This is so interesting! Aside from one or two intelligent postings, it seems that most people’s opinions on gas prices (and everythings else)are totally emotional rantings having no basis in reality! Although, when you think about it, emotional rantings are probably just as valid as reasoned thought in this case. That’s because the world economy, gas prices included, is so complex as to be unknowable. While our rationally-thinking friends have most of the answer, there are so many factors involved that even they don’t have the whole story. Chaos theory and the butterfly effect rule here until computers can handle the complex computations needed to solve our problems. (And by the way — if I could afford a Prius, I would have been driving one years ago!)

  50. I think the oil prices are high because the oil companies know they can get away with it. Since they are not a part of our country there is no way to regulate them. They hate us and this is their act of terrorist.

I know a way to put a stop to the high gas prices altogether. We could boycott the oil companies and stop buying gas but we just can’t do without our vehicles. You can convert your vehicle to a water hybrid. Then fill up with water instead of gas. That will show them. To learn more go to http://stoppayingatthepump.com
