I will add to the list of gripes the harassment that foreign visitors are subject to when immigration and TSA authorities abuse their authority in petty ways to intimidate or downright be offensive. Just recently, the 70+ year old parents of a friend were detained for more than one hour upon their arrival and were questioned about their annual visits for 4 weeks each time (my friend and her sibling live in different states and have kids, all US citizens if that matters... Needless to say, having two adults travel rather than two families with kids is more economical). The result was that her parents were clearly frightened by the experience. One of my students was subject to an offensive remark by the immigrations office about her permanent resident status last March. And I won't even start on how arbitrary the issuance of tourist visas is.
