Hugh Laurie And “House”

Lynne Kiesling

Lest Megan McArdle think that she is the only person missing “House” on Fox while abroad, let me chime in. I enjoy Hugh Laurie immensely in every role he has ever played, the writing on this show is sardonic and good, and Robert Sean Leonard, woof. I’ve always had a hankering for him. So I’m missing it while abroad too, although I have to say that I’ve done a pretty pathetic job of catching it at home too. Have to wait for the DVDs…

But this quote on the House website made me chuckle:

Chase-“You can trust me.”

House-“The problem is, if I can’t trust you, I can’t trust your statement that I can trust you. But thanks, you’ve been a big help.”

-Mob Rules

Aaaaah, makes the game theorist in me very happy!

What brought this to my mind was tonight, while eating dinner in my apartment, I was watching some Fry & Laurie as Jeeves & Wooster from P.G. Wodehouse. What good fun!

  1. Sheesh, why am I not surprised? I typically do not like doctor shows, but House is well written and sardonic. Plus I’ll watch anything with Hugh Laurie in it.

BTW, if anyone knows where to get a dvd of “The Best of Fry & Laurie,” please let me know.

  2. Seems to be available as a VHS on amazon.com, but not quite what you wanted, was it?

My favorite missed TV show was the Canadian/BBC one (?)-year-animated-wonder The Mr. Hell Show!. Brilliant writing, brutally funny, I haven’t laughed so hard in years. Incredibly hard to find.

As to missing “House”, good grief, don’t they have cable DVRs out there in the wilds of Illinois?

  3. Yeah, no more video tapes.

As for the DVR, we continue to live under the elitist delusion that we don’t watch enough TV to warrant spending the $$ on a DVR. Although the geekalicious KP Spouse already owns a kickin’ video card and DVR server card that are waiting for him to build one … but he’s building the music server first. ‘Cuz we listen to more tunes than we watch TV.

  4. There are few things that I have any sort of emotional attachment to. A couple family items. My mountain bike. And my TiVo. I own an ipod, and couldn’t really care less about it. It’s a shiny music box. But DVRs are really on another level.

I’m sure you’ve heard all it before from TiVo owners, so I won’t go through the great features. Suffice it to say that I now find myself watching less TV, since I can plan what to see when. In fact, my fiancee and I tend to spend nights in watching TV as often as movies. Mix that with Netflix, and it’s getting close to video-on-demand. (I wonder if it would be a wide spread effect that people would watch less if they could just order up what they wanted — would people binge, or would we lose the sense of evenings being tied to “schedules” for shows?)

Maybe I’ll give House a watch, after all this support of it. Hold on…there…now it’s on deck with Lost, The Shield, MI-5, and Are You Being Served?

By the way — the music server home-grown, or something like Sonos?

  5. Are You Being Served? EEEUW! It’s so campy I can barely stand it. The only British comedy I like less is Keeping Up Appearances, or Benny Hill.

And of course I love MI-5 and would thus recommend it to you, although the primary reason I watch it is Matthew McFadyen, woof, so your mileage may vary. It is well written and has interesting plots, and the KP Spouse tells me that the cinematography is good, but I’m a philistine, so what do I know?

Le serveur de la musique is home grown. The KP Spouse is a Linux stud and has been for almost as long as Mr. Torvalds himself, so he won’t sully himself with … baaah! … commercial products. Ooops, there’s that elitism again, just in another form …

  6. Well, it’s no Monty Python, but the guy with huge ears cracks me up.

MI-5 has been a must see at my place since it hit the US airwaves. From my fiance’s reactions, I think the Matthew McFayden thing is a general reaction. Which is fine, because she can barely get a word out of me whenever Rachel Weisz is on-screen. And, while I try to convince her of the many merits of the revitalized Battlestar Galactica, she can tell I’m a sucker for Mary McDonnell as Prez.

Good man, then, on the music system. You’ll have to have him post notes on it. I’m struggling with multi-room interfaces for the same server.

  8. Ian,

We should definitely chat, as the multi-room thing is one of his challenges. AAMOF (that’s as a matter of fact), I should just let you and him talk, because I’m just noise and pretty much don’t care as long as it works.

  9. I think house should just tell Carrie (the girl docter) how he feels god i seen most of the shows and they like eachother god just go to her and tell her how you feel house!!! x.x

I can’t believe I never noticed him before, now I can’t get enough of anything he is in.

Hugh Laurie is burning down my house; he is sooo hot.

  16. I missed the first two or three episodes of House. Of course I haven’t missed any since I saw my fist one. My question is, has it ever been explained what happened to House’s leg to cause his limp? He is so sexy and surly, but under that gruff exterior seems to be a man in much pain emotionally as well as physically. I would appteciate the info. Thanks.

  17. The hugh laurie moonfruit site has a new url and its well worth checking out. The forum is excellent and has a lovely feel to it.
