Boundless Creativity: Sonic Fabric

Lynne Kiesling

Interesting news item from Wired: Sonic Fabric is made from recycled audio tape woven with cotton, and it can be played to create (or re-create!) sound from four of the tracks on the tape. Sonic Fabric is the creation of audio-visual artist Alyce Santoro, and the Wired article describes the origins of the idea in her childhood love of sailing combined with the motion of Tibetan prayer flags. John Fishman wore and played a Sonic Fabric dress in Phish concerts in the past. And the designs are also visually appealing.

She has designed a Sonic Fabric Monk/Messenger bag, part Tibetan monk, part New York bike messenger.
