An update from others who have been writing about gasoline prices while I have not:
- Jim Hamilton at EconBrowser about political pandering over gasoline taxes (there’s a shocker …).
- Tim Haab and John Whitehead are on a roll about gas prices at Environmental Economist. The link is to their “Energy Resources” category, which contains the several posts they’ve had about various and sundry aspects of gas prices.
- John Whitehead at Environmental Economics about yet another round of gas tax vs. CAFE standards debates.
- Two posts at Asymmetrical Information: one on a reader question about high oil profits and the (putative) lack of price competition, and another on why high gasoline prices have such a high political profile.
It is already higher than that in much of Europe. Part of the problem here is taxes; most of the problem in Europe is as well. The politicians’ problem is that the extra revenue isn’t going into government treasuries. Many of those complaining the loudest now were in favor of a $0.50 increase in the per gallon tax withing the past two years. Go figure!
