The New Passat Ad

Lynne Kiesling

I finally saw the new Passat ad that Grant McCracken analyzed late last week (read Grant’s post if you haven’t seen the ad). I don’t completely agree with Grant that it’s a little smug, because at least in the one I saw all of the cars with the megaphones were brash, garish, expensive cars. I particularly liked the way the female Passat passenger looked at the driver, waved the megaphone in her hand, shrugged, and tossed it.

Very interesting advertising.

  1. Who are they kidding? The New Passat stickers up to $40k! The average out the door price is over $30k.

Now, who buys a $40k car? There is “ego” involved in that decision.

The only reason that it had less “ego emissions” than, say, a similarly priced Lexus ES330 is that the Lexus brand is more prestigous than VW.

In any case, the Passat is a very nice car. Too bad they dropped the diesel.
