Where I’ve Been Lately

Lynne Kiesling

I’ve not been the diligent writer here lately, for three primary reasons: I’ve been working on a book manuscript, we’ve started our house renovation and moved to a temporary apartment, and I’ve been spending a lot of time on a new course prep for a new job. But I’m slowly crawling out from under these things … and will be doing things here like more writing and upgrading the guts of KP (including fixing that pesky Google RSS feed that stubbornly refuses to work).

A little more detail below the fold.

I’m working on a book manuscript that combines complexity science, Austrian economics, and new institutional economics, and applies it to thinking about regulatory institutions that are more adaptive and less backward-looking in the electric power industry. My intention was to get the thing done by September, but for various reasons it hasn’t happened, but I’m trying not to beat myself up about it. The new deadline is December; the project is about 85% done, and once fall teaching is over I’ll have concentrated time to pull it together. I’ve also had some wonderful, helpful feedback from thoughtful readers (you know who you are!), to whom I’m exceedingly grateful. I’ll post some excerpts here over the course of the fall.

The house: more about this later too, because some folks have expressed interest in our renovation, but two weeks ago the contractors tore the back off of our house. We’ve been in the process of getting the construction loan, moving into an apartment, and all of the ancillary activities associated with these. It’s like having a full-time job, which is too bad, because I already pretty much have a couple of those!

The new job: I now have a joint appointment at Northwestern between the Economics Department and the Kellogg School of Management. I’ll be teaching a course in environmental management and sustainability for MBA students, in addition to the undergraduate teaching I’ve been doing. So far, so good, but the course prep is a lot of work!

  1. Way to go on the manuscript.

Good luck with the house project.

    Congratulations on the new appointment.

What are you planning to do with all your free time?
